Tips for Continuing a Long and Healthy Life



If you, like most people are striving to live a long and healthy life it's important to keep your heart healthy. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention states, cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in both men and women.  The most important ways to have a healthy heart are by eating a heart healthy diet and exercise.  Your lifestyle makes the most impact on your health.

Risk Factors:

There are several risk factors that contribute to heart disease, the most common risk factors include; high blood pressure, being overweight, high cholesterol levels, smoking tobacco, physical inactivity, diabetes, men being over 55 years old, women being over 65 years old, and family history.  Some of these risk factors are out of your control, like your age and family history.  However, some of these risk factors are avoidable just by changing your lifestyle.

Heart Healthy Diets:

When drastically changing your diet it's important to consult a doctor or nutritionist to develop a diet plan that is specifically designed for you.  Heart healthy diets include eating more fruits, vegetables, poultry, fish, whole-grains, and low fat dairy products.  It's important to limit how much sodium, red meat, sweetened drinks, and sweets that you consume.  It's also essential to eat less total fat, saturated fat, trans fat, and cholesterol.  Changing your diet to a heart healthy diet can lower your blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood fat levels.

Exercises:


Exercising for at least 30 minutes a day can help you lose weight, lower blood pressure, reduce heart disease complications, lower risk for diabetes, reduce your risk of a stroke, as well as lower your risk for developing other serious medical conditions.  Some possible moderate exercises that you could do include; walking, dancing, gardening, light weightlifting, and other outdoor activities.

Heart Supplements:

There are many different types of supplements that can benefit your heart.  These heart supplements include; niacin, fish oil, plant sterols, red yeast rice, fiber, green tea extract, coenzyme Q10, B-complex vitamins, and policosanol.  It's very important to consult your doctor before starting a new vitamin supplement.

Even though cardiovascular disease is the number one cause of death in men and women in the United States you don't need to add yourself to that statistic.  Through a combination of decreasing risk factors, eating a heart healthy diet, exercise, and using heart supplements you can continue to live a long and healthy life.
